See my review of Amanda for my general impressions of the series I ve owned this one for years, which didn t really put it at the top of the list for the Great Sunfire Re Read, but I went ahead and forced it down while waiting for some others to arrive in the mail.Rachel Roth formerly Rothkowski until the Ellis Island folks did a chop chop has just arrived in America in 1910, having fled the persecution of the Jews in Poland The Roths have to share an apartment with their relatives, the Ros See my review of Amanda for my general impressions of the series I ve owned this one for years, which didn t really put it at the top of the list for the Great Sunfire Re Read, but I went ahead and forced it down while waiting for some others to arrive in the mail.Rachel Roth formerly Rothkowski until the Ellis Island folks did a chop chop has just arrived in America in 1910, having fled the persecution of the Jews in Poland The Roths have to share an apartment with their relatives, the Rosens, including cousin Hannah, who takes an immediate dislike to Rachel Could that have anything to do with the fact that cute neighbor Joshua Fine is clearly interested in Rachel Hmm You think Joshua wants a traditional wife and home, but Rachel isinterested in learning American customs and working for a living She meets a young reporter named Nathan Meyers, who shares her outlook on life, and she meets new best friend Gina when she takes a job at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory burst of ominous music And that s pretty much the plot There is a trend amongst the later Sunfires to use major disasters as the historical setting I m still of mixed feelings about it, but at least it worked a little better in this story than in some The chapters dealing with the fire are written fairly well, but it s her portrayal of the aftermath of the fire that earns Schurfranz a little pat on the back, for once The funeral march is somber and weighty, and Rachel s condolence visit to Gina s mother is very sweet and sad The romantic plot bumbles along, as per typical Schurfranz The choice of suitor is completely obvious from the second chapter or so I don t know if the author means to make it this obvious, but she s got Joshua grilling Rachel about her future, frowning at her plans to go to college, and telling her she should be traditional and prepare for marriage Which comes off as incredibly rude, since he s just met Rachel Oh, but couldn t he change his mind Have you read a Sunfire But let s not feel sorry for Joshua Remember Hannah s jealousy There s a connection there that will just shock and amaze you, ho hum.Oh, but what about the author s penchant for throwing in famous historical figures It s slightly subdued here the most we get is Samuel Gompers but of course Rachel becomes involved with the union, and she gets to stand around and listen to and Schurfranz gets to quote from historical union speeches It s nice to see Rachel get passionate about the union in honor of Gina, so it doesn t ring quite as annoyingly false as the usual employment of this device.Verdict I can t say too much against it, really Other than the fire, not a whole lot happens, but it s a pleasant little book I originally read this series back in the 80s, checking them out from my elementary school library Having re read them as an adult I think they stand the test of time and are still relevant as far as historical fiction is concerned. Even grading on a curve, this still isn t great It s better than a lot of Sunfire novels it even has a short but interesting subplot about union activity , but that s fairly faint praise, isn t it It snot the worst That s really all you can say For my full recap and review including spoilers, check out Young Adult Historical Vault Even grading on a curve, this still isn t great It s better than a lot of Sunfire novels it even has a short but interesting subplot about union activity , but that s fairly faint praise, isn t it It snot the worst That s really all you can say For my full recap and review including spoilers, check out Young Adult Historical Vault Waxing Nostalgic 11 This book is about an immigrant family from Poland arriving in New York and trying to find the balance between tradition and religion and the new world in USA Rachel finds her place and finds love.
